MEDICAL RESEARCH

Until recently, medical research has largely ignored many health issues important to women, and women were underrepresented in clinical trials. In the past, research on women's health focused on fertility and reproduction, and too little research was aimed at women's unique response to disease and to common health issues. Even though women make up 51 percent of the U.S. population, research on major diseases and the drugs to treat them has been done mostly on mice and men. At present, most women still receive health assessments, outcomes, and recommendations based on what works for men.
