Don’t Give Your Loved one Reasons to Leave Drug Rehab(via Worldwide Drug Addiction News)

Here is a simple suggestion.  If you want your family member to stay and complete a drug rehab program, do not give them reasons to leave.  This may seem obvious, but it happens often enough, that I feel the need to bring it up here.  If your family member is going to stay at a drug and alcohol rehab center for 90 days, there are bound to be things in life happen.  Aunt Martha for example may get very sick.  Some crisis may happen in the family business.

When you are talking on the phone to your son, daughter, or spouse at rehab, you have to be careful to share only information that will suport them in completing their program.  They cannot make aunt Martha better.  In fact, in aunt Martha knew her illness was the reason for someone leaving drug rehab early, I'm sure whe would be upset and it would make her even more ill.  So here is a suggestion.  Unless you are 100% sure that the family member who is in rehab at the present time can solve the crisis, DO NOT TELL THEM.  That may seem kind of harsh, but are you willing to RISK their life, in order to tell them about it. If they leave a program early, they are putting their life at risk.  If you give them the reason to leave a drug rehab program early, you are at least, somewhat responsible.

If you do pass on the knowledge of a family crisis to someone at a drug rehab, do not expect the staff there to somehow get the client to stay.  We are not miracle workers.  Without real support from the family, clients will leave before they are ready.
